Make It For Your Best Friend Sister!

Today, we going to start a starter recipe, plus add the gift of time, plus a generous amount of mixing and baking, and the end result will be one of the best gifts you ever gave your best friend sister:

A Homemade Loaf of Amish Friendship Bread -- and if you live close enough, it can even be delivered right-out-of-the-oven-warm!

In This Section You'll Find:

The friendship bread must be given with a bag of bread starter, so your Something Sister can bake a loaf and pass it on to her best friend sister.

That's how the Amish Friendship Bread recipe and starter recipe travels -- from friend to friend.

Just a few weeks ago, Tom and I were visiting friends in Cleveland. I was telling Dottie, who is one of my original Something Sisters, all about our new website. You see, Dottie and I went to the same college and were roommates during our Student Teaching days.

I asked her if she had heard anything about an Amish Friendship Bread and starter recipe, since they live fairly close to several Amish communities. Well, she just threw her head back and laughed out loud!

She has made tons of Amish friendship bread and starter kits, and, of course, she had the recipes!

She had two recipes and one was very old. The paper was kind of wrinkled and starting to yellow. You could tell it had been typed on a typewriter and copied many times. Little written notes had been added.

I loved it. It was like a piece of history, right there in my hands!

Then she had a newer recipe -- the Amish Friendship Bread Starter. So that is where we will start, with the starter!

Ingredients: Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipe

  • 1 (0.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 Cup warm water (110 degrees Fahrenheit, 45 degrees Celsius)
  • 1 Cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 Cup white sugar
  • 1 Cup milk

Kitchen Notes: Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipe

  • Do not use metal utensils or bowl for mixing.
  • Do not refrigerate.
  • The starter should be left at room temperature. Drape loosely with dish towel or plastic wrap.
  • If using a sealed Ziploc bag, be sure to let the air out if the bag gets too puffy.
  • When you make a starter from scratch, you can sometimes end up with a much greater yield than 4 Cups, depending on the temperature of your kitchen and eagerness of your starter!
  • If this happens, reserve one cup for baking and divide the remaining batter into Ziploc baggies of 1 cup each to freeze or share with friends.

Directions For Mixing: Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipe

  • In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Let stand 10 minutes.
  • In a 2-quart glass, plastic or ceramic container, combine 1 Cup flour and 1 Cup white sugar.
  • Mix thoroughly with a non-metal whisk or spoon.
  • Slowly stir in 1 Cup milk and dissolved yeast mixture.
  • Cover loosely and let stand at room temperature until bubbly. Consider this day 1 of the 10 day cycle.

Days 2-5: Squeeze the bag, letting the air out.

Day 6: Add: 1 Cup flour, 1 Cup sugar, and 1 Cup milk

Day 7-9: Squeeze the bag, letting the air out, if necessary.

Day 10: Combine in a large bowl: The batter you have been lovingly taking care of for the last 10 days! Add 1 Cup flour, 1 Cup sugar, and 1 Cup milk. Mix with wooden spoon. Pour Four, 1 Cup Starters into Ziploc bags. Keep one Starter for yourself and give the other three starters to your friends along with the instructions.

Wow! If anyone loves you enough to go through all of this to make YOU a loaf of Amish Friendship Bread, treasure every mouthful!

The recipe for the actual loaf of Amish Friendship Bread is on the next page.
